When talking watches, most people thing of China, Taiwan or Switzerland. But several counties in south America also have a large production of watches. In fact over the last 10 years, we have seen a big increase in export of south American watches. Not only in low quality copy watches, but also in cheap quality brand such as Royce, Billige ure and a few other less known brands. It’s still not a huge trade, but it’s one of the many growing areas within south America. In 2014 alone this industri had a whole 13% grown in value terms.
It’s mainly low budget watches, but the quality is still alot better than what you find from China or Taiwan. The prices are also a little higer, but well worth the price. Designs are pretty nice, especially with brands such as Billige Ure, Dameure or Royce, but in my opinion, still not as cool as the watches from Switzerland or even some of the newer Chinese ones. I think that in a few years this will all change. As this is such as growing industri, and the quality is really good, then the style and design will catch up soon. They just need to get a hold of some of the good designers.
In Buenos Aires alone, they have build 2 new watch factories in 2013 and 2014, which can explain the 13% grown in the watch industri, in 2014. These factories are state of the art, with high end machinery and a actually a low amount of manual labor. Both factories are able to produce several thousands watches a day, which might tell a little about how big a niche this is.
But does people still wear a watch here in 2015, haven’t everybody more or less replaced the watch with a smart phone? If you asked me 6 or 7 years ago I would have tought so too. But since then it has become quite popular to wear a watch again. For some it’s a small rebellion against the mobilephones, for others it’s merely a piece of jewellery or to send a certain fashion statement. Billige Ure is one example of a brand that is pretty cheap, has a nice design and a quality that most people would be satisfied with. But there are still a lot of people who think that a watch has to cost several thousand dollars, or if it’s not a Rolex, then it’s not worth wearing. Others want some of the less known brands, but still an expensive brand that radiates style and money. This could be some of the many vintage brands like Herreure or something similar. This is what I enjoy about watches and why it’s such a fasinating thing. Everybody got his or her own idea about what a watch should be like. It’s a very personal item and quite often a person have several watches for different things. Some types that goes well with a suit, others for just daily day uses in the office. You can get watches to use for almost any event and in any price range.
